More Women Candidates
December 8, 2007
Dear Editor of 24 Hours:
I was disappointed to read your headline yesterday regarding the NDP's plan to promote more women candidates. Not only did your paper do a poor job of examining the causes of why so few women are elected to our Legislatures and Parliaments, your paper's content only helped to further display the need to increase women's voice, not only in politics, but in the media and all walks of life.
Your decision on December 6th, the National Day of Remembrance and Action of Violence Against Women, to not acknowledge the Day's importance and the serious issue of violence against women was very disheartening. While your paper continues to cover the Pickton trial, you made no mention of this serious issue. It didn't even make the one-inch "Today in History" footnote you include in your paper.
Not only do I support the plan to see more women elected, but perhaps it's time 24 Hours took a look in the mirror and asked itself what it and other media are doing to ensure women's voices are represented.
Sincerely,
ANGELA SCHIRA
